13 Rom-Coms to Watch on Valentine’s Day, Ranked
Looking for the most ideal, charming, feel-good, (maybe) laugh-out-loud romantic comedy to watch on Valentine’s Day? I’m not talking about romance movies specifically, but rather, the Romantic Comedy. The romantic comedy movies that not only bring the charm and romance that typical Romance Movies bring, but also bring the laughs and sometimes goofy scenes. These are my favorite movies because they simply bring a smile to my face.
And of course, because I love a good ranking, these will be ranked from 13 to 1 (1 being my favorite!).
Disclaimer: All opinions are my own. And they constantly change. <3
13. 13 Going On 30
The more I think about this movie, the more I love it. This movie is just romantic comedy magic. Literally. It has magic. Jennifer Garner is perfect. Mark Ruffalo is perfect. Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo are perfect. Not only is it a quintessential romance, it also deals with themes of coming of age, growing up, and evolving into the person you want to be.
12. Sweet Home Alabama
Into cowboy romances? Patrick Dempsey, Reese Witherspoon, yeah. But Josh Lucas? Sign me up. This Southern romantic comedy is sweet like sweet tea. This is a perfect romantic comedy to watch while you’re snuggled up on the couch.
11. The Proposal
Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in a romantic comedy together? And Betty White? And Craig Nelson? And Mary Steenburgen? And Oscar Nunez of The Office fame? And Malin Akerman? What a cast. Sandra and Ryan were already so great, then they added all of those people and made it so much better. Many people see this as a comedy, and it is—but it is also a very underrated romance, too. A workplace rom-com. If you loved Book Lovers by Emily Henry, you probably liked this movie.
10. 10 Things I Hate About You
10, 10 things? See what I did there? If I had to include only a couple of teen romance movies on this list, this one had to take a spot. I can’t even pick out a single star of this movie because the casting was impeccable. The speech at the end gets me every time.
9. Anyone But You
Glen Powell, Glen Powell, Glen Powell. If I say his name three times, does that mean he’ll appear at my door? This movie dominated the box office in 2023 and for good reason. If I’m being honest, as a connissuer of rom-coms, this single-handedly brought back rom-coms to mainstream media and reinvigorated not only the general public but actors into loving rom-coms. Not just serious romance movies, but romantic comedies. I have a feeling we’re about to enter an era of romantic comedies. This one, set in Australia and on the eve of her sister’s wedding, features Sydney Sweeney as Bea. Glen Powell plays Ben, whose best friend from childhood is marrying Bea’s sister. The story is based on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, which is the only reason you need to watch this film—when a rom-com is based off a Shakespeare play, then you know it’s going to be a hit.
8. Just Go With It
Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston will forever be That Rom-Com (emphasis on the com, in comedy) couple to me. I love this movie so much. To me, this movie was played so much on FX that it’s engrained in my head as one of the best romantic comedies. To me, this is a truly underrated romantic comedy that plays into some of my favorite tropes: Friends to Lovers, Fake Dating, and Fake Marriage.
7. When Harry Met Sally
Listen. This is one of my all-time favorite romantic comedies, but this is not a romance movie that I’d typically play at V-Day. This is a movie I’d probably play at Christmastime or New Year’s. Still, I love to watch that speech made by Billy Crystal’s character (Harry) at the end of the movie.
6. How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days
To me, this is the rom-com blueprint. More specifically, this is the blueprint for enemies-to-lovers.
5. To All The Boys I Loved Before
Peter Kavinsky and Lara Jean Covey carried the tittle of young adult/teen romantic comedy prince and princess for a while. They were finally given a rest, with others taking up the mantle, but I think they need to rightfully take back their crowns. This is an impeccable movie franchise that is an ideal movie for teens and young adults to watch on Valentine’s Day.
4. Set It Up
Glen Powell … and Zoey Deutch. Can’t ignore her, too. Many think of Anyone But You as Glen Powell’s great rom-com debut, but I recommend those people to watch Set It Up on Netflix. It’s a fantastic, humorous workplace enemies/rivals to lovers (sort of—they work in the same building but under different bosses, in two separate industries) romance. They are two overworked assistants looking to set their demanding bosses up in a relationship. Along the way, their characters actually start to fall for one another. If that didn’t convince you, this movie also has Pete Davidson.
3. Valentine’s Day
This is the ULTIMATE Valentine’s Day movie to watch. I mean, talk about a star-studded cast. I need more of these movies. I would love a sequel to this movie in particular.
2. Crazy Rich Asians
The class divide, strong female main character, flashy Singaporean wealth, and Michelle Yeoh. Everything this movie has, I love it all. I want the sequel more than I want air to breathe. It is one of my all-time favorite romantic comedy movies, and if I’m being honest, probably one of my all-time favorite movies.
1. You’ve Got Mail
I had to end on another Meg Ryan movie. Now. You may expect Sleepless in Seattle to be on this list … and while you may think that, I have to disagree. I don’t really like that movie as much as these fall in New York stories. This sweet, enemies/rivals to lovers movie features bookstores, the Upper West Side, fall in New York, Meg Ryan, and 90s fashion. While it’s considered a quintessential fall movie, I think the scenes of springtime and flowers can be enjoyed during the blooming month of February.
