11 Tips To Prioritize Self-Care This Summer

Prioritizing self-care during the summer is a great way to recharge and maintain your well-being. Here are some tips to help you make self-care a priority.

1. Set boundaries.

Ensure you set clear boundaries between work and personal time. Designate specific times for work and leisure. Shut your laptop at closing time and avoid opening the Gmail, Calendar, Slack, or any other work-related apps on your phone. Turn off notifications. If something really needs to get done, that’s okay! But evaluate if it can wait ‘til the next week. Also, don't overcommit. Learn to say no to activities or responsibilities that drain your energy. You don’t have to say yes to everything! That being said, don’t say no to everything. Start saying yes to new experiences and adventures!

2. Create a new summer routine.

Start your day with activities that energize you, such as a morning walk, journaling, or a healthy breakfast. My favorite part about my morning routine is sitting down on my couch with a cup of coffee and the book that I’m reading. I set aside my phone to read and this time has become so cherished for me.

Similar to the morning, establish a calming evening routine to help you relax and prepare for a restful night's sleep. Try to stay off your phone—I know it can be really tempting—and pick up a book or journal to wind down. Avoid caffeinated drinks and alcohol. Fill up your Stanley cup and set it on your night stand.

3. Stay active!

Take advantage of the good weather by engaging in outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, or cycling. Go to the pool! Check out a local hiking trail. Walk around your neighborhood at the same time every day (and stick to those routines!). Visit your gym that you’ve been dying to go to all year and check out the fitness classes. Maintain a consistent exercise routine to boost your mood and energy levels.

4. Take care of your body

Incorporate fresh fruits, vegetables, and plenty of water into your diet to stay hydrated and nourished. Practice mindful eating by paying attention to your hunger cues and enjoying your meals without distractions. Treat yourself this summer. Healthy eating is important, but don’t ignore what your body wants or craves—indulge in the sweet treats and beverages.

5. Take time for hobbies.

Pursue your interests in any hobbies and spend time on hobbies or activities that you enjoy and that help you relax and unwind. This is your chance to learn something new! Summer can be a great time to pick up a new hobby or skill. Hobbies include: embroidery (cross-stitch and needlepoint), reading, baking, crochet, knitting, water sports (kayaking, canoeing, etc.), hiking, coloring, gardening, and flower arranging. 6. Disconnect to reconnect.

Limit screen time and take regular breaks from digital devices to reduce stress and improve mental clarity. I know it can be tempting to post what you’re up to this summer, but try and go without social media for a while. Delete the apps if your soul calls for it. Spend time in nature to disconnect from technology. Take a long walk outside (during the day) when you feel the need to scroll. Read a good book at night when you feel the need to scroll. Whatever it is, rely less on your phones and unplug to connect.

7. Prioritize mental health.

Incorporate mindfulness practices like journaling, stretching, deep breathing, or yoga into your daily routine. Take this time to reflect on everything this year has brought you and everything that you want to work on in the future. Decide on what you want to focus on for the rest of the year. Journal any thoughts, feelings, and/or worries you may have. Work with reflection prompts to guide you. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a therapist or counselor if you need someone to talk to.

8. Plan mini-breaks and staycations.

While I love a good, long vacation, staycations are also a move! Plan short getaways or staycations to change your environment and refresh your mind. Is there a beach nearby? Check out local museums and historical sites in your town. Try out restaurants. Explore nearby attractions or nature spots for a quick and refreshing break from your routine.

9. Rest and relaxation.

Don’t ignore your sleep health. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night to ensure your body and mind are well-rested. Practice relaxation techniques like reading, listening to music, or taking a bath.

10. Stay social!

Connect with loved ones! Spend quality time with family and friends. Say yes and show up for your family and friends. Participate in community events or volunteer. There are always various events happening anywhere, so check out your local tourist board for more information on events. See how you can volunteer in your community! Check out opportunities at a food shelter, warehouse, or homeless shelter.

11. Reflect and set intentions.

Keep a journal to reflect on your experiences and emotions. Write down what you’re grateful for and your goals. Set realistic and achievable self-care goals for the summer to keep you motivated.

By incorporating these tips into your summer routine, you can prioritize self-care and enjoy a more balanced, fulfilling season.
