How To Get Stuff Done When You’re Feeling Unmotivated

We've all experienced those days where we wake up feeling utterly unmotivated to do anything. Maybe we're tired, feeling down, or overwhelmed by the tasks on our to-do list. Whatever the reason, it can be challenging to find the drive to get things done. I gave some tips in this blog post for getting yourself moving even when you're feeling unmotivated.

Break it down.

When you're looking at a task or project, it can be overwhelming to think about everything that needs to be done. This feeling can be a significant barrier to getting started. Instead, try breaking the task down into smaller, more manageable pieces. Make a list of everything that needs to be done, and then choose one small item to start with. Once you've completed that task, move onto the next one. This way, you'll be making progress and feeling accomplished, even if you're not making significant strides.

Find your why.

Sometimes the reason we're feeling unmotivated is that we don’t have sight of why we're doing what we're doing. Take a moment to reflect on why the task or project is important to you. What will completing it allow you to do or achieve? When you're feeling low on energy, reminding yourself of the bigger picture can help you find the motivation to keep going.

Change your environment.

Our environment can have a significant impact on our mood and energy levels. If you're feeling unmotivated, try changing your surroundings. Maybe that means moving to a different room, going outside for some fresh air, or even just tidying up your workspace. By making a small change to your environment, you can shift your mindset and find the energy to tackle your to-do list.

Get an accountability buddy.

Sometimes all we need is a little push from someone else to get started. Find a friend or colleague who can hold you accountable for completing your tasks. This could mean setting a deadline for yourself and checking in with your buddy to report your progress. Having someone else invested in your success can be a powerful motivator.

Take a break.

If you're feeling unmotivated, it could be a sign that you need a break. Sometimes our brains and bodies need time to recharge, and pushing ourselves to work through that can be counterproductive. Take a few minutes to step away from your work and do something that energizes you. Maybe that means taking a walk, doing some stretching, or listening to your favorite music. When you come back to your work, you might find that you have the motivation to get started.

Celebrate small wins.

When we're feeling unmotivated, it can be easy to focus on all the things we haven't done yet. Instead, try focusing on the things you have accomplished. Celebrate the small wins, like completing a task on your to-do list or making progress towards a larger goal. By acknowledging your successes, you'll feel more motivated to keep going.

Feeling unmotivated is a common experience, but it doesn't have to hold you back. By doing and implementing some of these tips, you can find the motivation to get things done. Remember, progress is progress, no matter how small. So keep taking those small steps, and you'll be amazed at how far you can go.
