10 Shows + Movies That I Watch Whenever I’m Feeling Sad or Overwhelmed

Hey, friends. I hope you’re having a wonderful day. As I’m writing this, it’s gloomy and rainy. I’m in a headspace right now that’s not really great, to be honest, but I’m still writing.

Everyone has those days. (Everybody gets that way.) Hannah Montana lyrics aside, you’re not going to have a good day every day. For some, those days might appear more than usual—especially in a pandemic! Whenever I’m feeling gloomy or sad or anxious or overwhelmed, I tend to turn to a movie or comfort TV show. These movies and TV shows just make me laugh out loud or give me the occasional cry sesh. But either way, they warm my heart and bring a smile to my face—which is much, much needed in not only this crazy time we live in but all year-round, pandemic or not.

You’ve got mail

I watched this for the first time in 2020 and let me tell you, it’s one of my favorite go-to comfort movies. Something about fall in New York, Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, and bookstores just improves my overall mood. Highly, highly recommend.

Watch on HBO Max.

HIGH SCHOOL musical (1,2,3)

We’re really going for range here, people. Who doesn’t get up and dance to “We’re All In This Together” and you’re lying if “Breaking Free” and “Bet On It” are you go-to car karaoke songs.

Watch all three on Disney+ now for a good 2000s nostalgic throwback. (And stream the soundtracks!)

IRON MAN

I am a growing Marvel fan. Iron Man was one of the first Marvel movies that I ever watched—-way back before I even knew the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) existed. Definitely one of my comfort movies. Besides, who doesn’t love a good Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow moment?

Watch on Disney+ now.

A week away

For fans of High School Musical and Camp Rock, A Week Away is a fun, faith-based Glee-type musical that is set at a week-long summer camp. The movie follows Will Hawkins, a teenage rebel (yes, I said that correctly) who is sent to camp instead of juvie. There, he meets Avery (played by Bailee Madison). Plus, there are songs. (Songs are from 90s and early 2000s Christian songs, but reimagined.)

Watch on Netflix. (And stream the soundtrack!)

The devil wears prada

This one is typically on in the background on a rainy day. I love all of the outfits and each character in this movie is perfect. Plus Emily Blunt? It’s a great go-to movie when you have nothing to watch and you’re in a funk.

Watch on Prime Video.

The avengers

I did say that I am a Marvel fan, right? Honestly, I love the first Avengers movie. I like all of them coming together, the OG Avengers, and working together to defeat a common enemy. I would say to just watch The Avengers, but why not have your own little Marvel marathon? It could definitely pull you out of a funk.

Watch on Disney+ now.

FRIENDS

Alright, we’re headed into the TV territory, I promise. Friends is just that classic show that everyone has on in the background. Well, I do too! It’s such a good show and it puts me in the best mood. I find myself quoting lines from the show and even trying to dress like Rachel.

And plus, singing the theme song at the top of your lungs whenever it comes on will put you in one of the best moods.

Watch on HBO Max.

SEX AND THE CITY

Sometimes, we all just need a little Carrie Bradshaw in our lives. Like some of the other shows on this list, the episodes are quick, 30 minutes, and personally, Carrie is a writer and I am a writer! (I know, I rolled my eyes too.)

I would definitely recommend to someone who’s just overwhelmed—especially overwhelmed with the dating scene.

Watch on HBO Max.

NEW GIRL

AHHH—one of my favorite comfort TV shows. You cannot go wrong here. This is the perfect sitcom (in my opinion) that can bring you laughs, tears, and all the emotions. Especially with Jess and Nick, and Schmidt and Winston .. okay, basically the entire cast.

Watch on Netflix.

Younger

I just started watching this, and I am completely hooked. (Update: I’m already on season 6!) Not only is this for the city chic gals, but this was created by Darren Star, the writer behind “Sex and the City.” If you are constantly re-watching “Sex and the City,” then “Younger” is a must-watch.

I’m sure you’ll love it, go check it out.

Watch on Hulu.
