Album Review: The Good Witch by Maisie Peters

The Good Witch (Deluxe) by Maisie Peters is an album of heartbreak, a coming of age story, a story about growing up and evolving into your own person.

And I freaking love it.

It’s on repeat in my household.

I’m dancing, singing, head banging … even crying. Because I love it and want the whole world to know it.

The album came out in 2023, but I started listening to it in January. I am late to the Maisie Peters bandwagon, but I am hopping on with full force. I love her lyrical storytelling and I can really relate to the coming of age and wistfulness that she embodies in her music and lyrics.

She is truly an artist to watch.

My Favorite Songs

Right off the bat, my favorite songs on this album are: Coming of Age, History of Man, BSC, There It Goes, and Therapy. (Although this can certainly change at any time!)

My #1 favorite song (and won’t ever change) on this album is There It Goes. I listen to it whenever I need to smile. It makes me happy every time I listen to it. The song tells the story of moving on after heartbreak or a relationship, but also just moving on in general. I think if you’re stepping into a new chapter, then this song can feel relatable to you.

“I’m reading novels, I’m dating but just dating for sport, I’m getting coffees for free” and “I feel it changing, I’m young but I am aging and I need you less than I did” are lyrics that tear me apart. She’s early to mid 20s and writes these lyrics that mean something, that means you can pick yourself up and continue to live life after plans go awry (i.e., a relationship but also friendships, jobs, careers, other life plans, etc.).

History of Man is the song that led me to this amazing album. It’s a popular song on TikTok—and for good reason. It sums up the feminist experience and what it means to be a woman. (Think the Barbie movie!) It is also about the magic that exists within love. Lyrics like “She stays up, he’s sleeping like a lamb // She begs him, he says he doesn’t understand // She loves him more than anyone ever has, in the history of man” bring that meaning to life. The meaning behind the song can resonate with so many young women.

He stole our youth and promised heaven

The men start wars yet Troy hates Helen

Women’s hearts are lethal weapons

Did you hold mine and feel threatened?

Hear my lyrics, taste my venom

You are still my great obsession

I also really, really love Coming of Age. I think it’s one of those songs that would fit in any of the 2000s rom coms. The song is about her realizing that maybe she was the author of her own life the entire time, and taking back that power for herself, and also taking responsibility for the things she’s done in past relationships.

My Album Ranking:

Besides that, here’s my official album ranking. When I say “sometimes a skip” or “nah,” that does not mean I think it’s a horrible song. It’s just that I like the other songs better! Those songs under those categories are still great songs and I’m sure there’s love out there for those songs.
