What I Read In September + My October TBR

I read SEVEN books in the month of September … for me, that is quite an accomplishment. I’m sooo excited to tell you about the books I read this month. I listened to two on audio, one a romance book and one a celebrity memoir. All of the books I read are 4 stars and above.

I also hit my reading goal! I had a goal of 50 books to read, which is less than my reading goal last year, so the number didn’t really mean anything. Truly, I had a goal of reading books I enjoy, and I think I did just that. This year, I wanted (and still want) to focus on quality rather than quantity.

Tastes Like Shakkar by Nisha Sharma

I really enjoyed this one! It’s the second book that follows Dating Dr. Dil, and both books are based on a Shakespeare play. This one is based on Much Ado About Nothing—but honestly, I know nothing about that play so I went in not knowing what was going to happen. But I loved Bunty and Bobbi’s banter and snarkiness that they exchanged with each other. It’s almost like it was enemies to lovers, but I wouldn’t have called them enemies, just two people that didn’t want to be in the same room as each other. They eventually had to work together—so I guess you can call it forced proximity. Anyway, I loved this book and I enjoyed reading about Indian customs especially Indian weddings!

Take A Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert

I finished this on audio (I guess I read three books on audio!). It was good, very steamy at times, which I wasn’t expecting. I really loved Get A Life, Chloe Brown and I can definitely see myself finishing this series with the final book in the trilogy, Act Your Age, Eve Brown. Dani was a bold and fun character, while Zaf was a sweet and hopeless romantic. There was a bit of fake dating in there, which I always love!

Reign by Katharine McGee

I love this book so much! It’s the conclusion to the American Royals series, and if you haven’t already read this series, I highly recommend you just buy all four books and binge-read in one weekend. This book felt like I was catching up with old friends. It also made me root for Daphne Deighton—who’s normally not my favorite character (contrary to popular belief) but I also enjoyed reading Nina and Beatrice’s POVs, always! Samantha’s character arc was definitely a growth, for sure.

Mr. Wrong Number by Lynn Painter

I listened to this one on audio! I really liked this one. The main character, Olivia, is a hot mess. She has a string of bad luck, and she has to move into her brother’s condo, where her brother’s best friend/roommate, Colin, also lives. They strike up a banter-filled frenemies/roommate friendship. However, unbeknownst to them, they’re talking to each other via text and a wrong number situation—You’ve Got Mail vibes for sure. If you like brother’s best friend love stories, then you’ll like this one for sure.

You, Again by Kate Goldbeck

THE FALL BOOK OF THE SEASON. No seriously, if you need a fall romance book to read this fall, then this is the book for you. It’s giving When Harry Met Sally but gender swapped where the guy is this uptight chef and the girl is more carefree and casual. The guy, Josh, loves serious relationships and settling down, and the girl, Ari, loves casual, carefree flings. The story takes place in time jumps, so it jumps from one time to months later. (But not a then/now book!) I won’t say anything else about it, other than the fact that if you love Nora Ephron books but with a modern twist, then go pick up this book immediately!

I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

I listened to this on audio; I always listen to celebrity memoirs on audio because it’s usually narrated by the author themselves. And this one was very worth the listen. A major trigger warning for eating disorders and even sexual assault. I thought she was going to talk more about Nickelodeon and her time on the show, and she did for a lot of the book, but the book focused more on her relationship with her mom and how a lot of that influenced her in life. I can’t wait to see what she has in store next; I think she’s a tremendous writer and I hope she continues to write because truly, that was incredible.

Rating: NR (I don’t like to rate celebrity memoirs anymore.)

The Christmas Orphans Club by Becca Freeman

AHHH all the Christmas vibes in this book! 🎄 What I love about this book is that although it’s technically classified as a romance, it’s so much more than that—it tells the tale of four friends and how friendships evolve in the late 20s and early 30s as each person moves onto different chapters of their lives. Each character is an “orphan,” and some, an actual orphan, and then others, don’t talk to their parents or live farther away. I love the found family aspect of this book. I flew through this in a matter of days and I hope you pick this one up, especially around the holiday season!
