6 Book-to-Screen Adaptations That I Can't Wait For In 2023

When a book gets turned into a movie and TV show, I always get excited. There’s this thing where readers get hesitant when their favorite book is turned into a movie or series, and for good reason, but when you finally get to watch that movie or series, the reader pinpoints every scene that was adapted and/or taken out. And they get mad for some reason? Like they don’t know it’s an adaptation, not supposed to include EVERY scene in the movie or series. One of my favorite examples is The Summer I Turned Pretty series. When I watched the TV series, and even anticipating season two, I realized the series went way off the plot of the first book. Not too off, but enough to differentiate. But I liked the series better than the book, because the series felt more mature and applicable to present-day 2022-23 Gen Z culture (compared to when the book released in the 2000s or 2010s). The TV series on Prime Video felt more “grown up” and mature, while still sticking to the main plots. And that’s what I like in an adaptation; it doesn’t have to follow every scene in the book, but I do want to see the same characters with similar attributes and characteristics.

So, as we go into 2023 and there are even more exciting book-to-screen adaptations coming soon, I wanted to round up my favorites. This isn’t a complete list of book-to-screen adaptations, but just five that I’m excited about. Some that I read, and some that I haven’t read but may read (or may not read).

Daisy Jones and the Six (Prime Video)

I am VERY excited for the book adaptation of Daisy Jones & The Six releasing on Prime Video in March. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the paperback, but the audiobook won me over. (I know, it’s complicated.) The audiobook has several narrators and was better to experience listening on audio overall.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

This is the prequel to the Hunger Games series, starring no one from the original franchise (or that I know of) and I did not read the book. To be honest, I probably won’t read the book, but I’m excited to watch the series! The series (and book) focuses on the 10th annual Hunger Games and a young, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (yes, that Snow). Rachel Zegler plays the main female lead, an old female tribute from District 12. You’ll recognize her from the film adaptation of West Side Story.

Love Again

Starring the guy from Outlander (Sam Heughan) and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this is an adaptation of the book titled “Text For You” by Sofie Cramer.

Red, White & Royal Blue (Prime Video)

This movie officially wrapped filming (yay!!!) and set to release in 2023. I loved this book when I read it in 2022 and so, so excited to watch the film adaptation starring Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine (who is also casted in the film adaptation The Idea of You).

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

I have not heard anything on this adaptation, so I don’t know if it’s releasing in 2023, but I HOPE that an announcement comes soon, at least this year.

The Idea of You

I am BEYOND excited to watch this book-to-screen adaptation starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine. I am patiently waiting for a trailer to drop in 2023, and if I can anticipate the movie actually releasing in 2023. This is a Harry Styles fan fiction and all I want is to see them in the south of France.
