Book Review: Out On A Limb by Hannah Bonam-Young

After finishing a seven-book fantasy series (thank you, SJM!), I knew I needed to unwind with a fluffy comfort romance book that was delightful to read and just plain fun. I’ve been eyeing Out on A Limb for a few weeks. Bookstagram has raved about this book with an accidental pregnancy, which is a trope you don’t normally see on bookstagram or booktok. Most people stay away from that trope. But in my opinion, like the rest of bookstagram, it was done exceptionally well.

Synopsis:

Winnifred "Win" McNulty has always been wildly independent. Not one to be coddled for her limb difference, Win has spent most of her life trying to prove that she can do it all on her own. And, with some minor adjustments, she's done just fine.

That is until she has a one-night stand with the incredibly charming Bo, a perfect stranger. And that one night changes everything.

While Bo is surprisingly elated to step up to the plate, Win finds herself unsure of whether she can handle this new challenge on her own or if she’ll need a helping hand.

Together, Win and Bo decide to get to know one another as friends and nothing more. But, as they both should know by now, life rarely goes according to plan.

My Review:

I liked the chemistry and the romance between the two characters, Bo and Win. It was established and very clear that these two characters were into each other. There was no rivalry between each other (although I do love a good enemies to lovers) and they complemented each other well. Bo is just another man to add to my very long list of book boyfriends.

I liked the disability representation too. About halfway through the book, though, I realized that it wasn’t a big plot point. You typically see that with “body positive” rom-coms (like I Feel Pretty movie) and the character’s weight is a main plot point and often a flaw (which it shouldn’t be). But in this one, both Win and Bo’s disabilities were not a major plot point, but rather a topic of conversation between them, and especially as they prepared for the birth of their baby.

The setting—I liked that the main characters were in their late 20s. It’s a weird thing for me to like, but I like it when the main characters are the same ages as me.

The only thing that was a bit off for me is that the ending felt a bit rushed. I wish that we got to read more of the conversations between Bo and Win. It would’ve been nice to read some of their “questions” game to get to know them more. However, I think we as the readers got to know them quite well. The ending felt like it creeped up on me. It was still great!!

Overall, I’d definitely recommend. It was such a great comfort romance to read when you just need to unwind and relax. Was it emotional? Yes. Was it romantic? Yes. Will Bo raise your standards for men? Absolutely. Was there a strong female character? Yes.

Rating: 4.5/5
